Romeo And Juliet (FramBag Theatre)

By | Published on Friday 31 August 2012

If you’re staging one of the most performed plays of all time, it can be a struggle to put your own stamp on it. FramBag have made a decent effort to do so with a streamlined script set entirely in bed. The ensemble clamber over and under their king-sized set like over-active kids at a slumber party, giving the show an unexpectedly playful, physical interpretation. Unfortunately, this has sucked all the emotion and conflict from the text. The show relies too heavily on the audience’s familiarity with the story rather than passion, chemistry, or acting skill, while their Shakespearean deliveries are simultaneously breathless and leaden. Despite an original interpretation, it can feel like the cast are just sleepwalking.

Greenside, 13-18 Aug, 1.35pm.
