ED2012 3/5 Reviews ED2012 Theatre Reviews
Romeo And Juliet (Fitchburg State University – Massachusetts)
By Olivia Sleet | Published on Friday 31 August 2012
Given that ‘Romeo And Juliet’ productions are so very commonplace, theatre troupes are always seeking to do something new. Whilst enjoyable, this student rendition doesn’t really do anything different with Shakespeare’s great work at all. They act with gusto and their enthusiasm is not dampened by unimaginative costumes, staging and props; particular credit is due to the leads of Romeo and Juliet, and also the Nurse, who steals every scene she’s in. The lines are delivered with conviction and the show is professionally executed despite a rudimentary production. Unfortunately this is just too much like a secondary school play – complete with Drama lesson-esque freeze frames and overdone death scenes – to stand out in such a saturated Shakespeare market.
