Puellae (The Truth About Chips And Other Things) (FraeNowhere)

Nalini Chetty’s new play is set during the Fringe, and after seeing Ruaridh Arrow’s impressive film of Chetty and her counterpart Samara MacLaren walking up the Royal Mile and ducking into a restaurant, the actresses enter the stage. Both women give an undeniably strong performance, but it is Arrow’s films, interlaced throughout, that make the piece feel whole. True to life, the conversational dialogue jumps around incessantly, perhaps to the detriment of any discernible narrative arc, and despite their insistent attempt at ‘debating’ charity and politics, the characters actually just seem to be discussing the ‘right’ way to live as a privately educated woman turning 30, appearing self-indulgent rather than self-aware. With an ultimately warming conclusion, but much turning in circles beforehand.
