Poison (Lonhattan Theatre Group)

By | Published on Friday 31 August 2012

“You’re about as deep as that puddle,” Toby tells Matt during ‘Poison’. Sadly, this applies to the whole show, not just one character. The central message is shallow – drugs are bad, mmmkay? – the characters are shallow – wide boy, lush, everyman going straight but easily led astray and good girl – and the script is shallow – “I have to be honest to myself… and you!” The plotting is crashingly obvious, the acting is dull, lines are often mumbled at the floor and the less said about the almost rape scene and its worrying implications about consent the better. The first couple of scenes are amusing and endearing, but that’s scant comfort. A show as deep as a puddle and equally worth avoiding.
