Platero Y Yo (University Of Puerto Rico – International Collegiate Theatre Festival)

By | Published on Friday 17 August 2012

‘Platero Y Yo’ is a surrealist Puerto Rican physical play about the life and loves of one man and his donkey and it’s pretty much how it sounds. At its best when doing big, set piece choreography such as the fire scene, the physical aspects of this production are excellent and the talented cast shine, with Jonathan Amaro standing out as the curious, loveable donkey, Platero. However, for a non-Spanish speaker, the monologue based scenes are slow and difficult to understand and this hampers the enjoyment. As a result the show alternates between delightfully confusing and annoyingly confusing. If you speak Spanish, definitely go. If you don’t hablo español, you may wish to think about it before attending.
