Platero Y Yo By Juan Ramon Jimenez (Mike Maran Productions)

Through smoked meats and cheeses one makes one’s way to the theatre in Valvona and Crolla, which sets the scene perfectly for this tale of long, ponderous, Mediterranean days. We follow the ramblings of the narrator and his donkey in a succession of vignettes, centered on the small Spanish town of Moguer. The action – or lack thereof – is shown with a small puppet donkey and symbolic props, leading at one point to an especially nice bit with a fan. With two different adaptations on this year, this must be a story that has won many hearts. If you are one of those hearts, you’ll adore this charming, slow-paced production, but think again if langerous anecdotes that lead nowhere send you to sleep.

Valvona and Crolla, 3, 4, 7-11, 14-18, 21-25, 27, times vary.
