Photographing The Dead (Binka Boo Productions)
By Dave Fargnoli | Published on Friday 31 August 2012
In a nameless post-war city, a curious, damaged woman wanders, ghost-like, describing her random encounters with a lonely photographer. Equipped only with a few props and a crisp neutral accent, Jennifer Lusk creates a believable world of depopulated subway stations and echoing museums, depicting these scenes through detailed descriptions and a shifting backdrop of vintage photographs. It’s reminiscent of film noir in its first person perspective and 1940s style, but the tone is quiet, pensive and poetic. Indeed, it could stand to increase the dramatic stakes, as this slow burn approach sometimes causes the energy to fade. Still, this is an effective exploration of the numbness which can follow a trauma, and an enjoyably lyrical mystery too.
