Peaceful (Off-Off-Off-Broadway Company / Bordello Theatre)
By Charlotte Ryan | Published on Friday 31 August 2012
Not for the faint-hearted, this spooky piece uses lighting, sound and the skills of a brilliant cast to terrify the unsuspecting audience. Ethel Charles, an old woman who lives alone in – what else! – a large creepy mansion, hires the bizarrely accented medium Mr de Villiers to exorcise the spirit she believes is haunting her home. What follows is a gripping hour of noises, lighting effects and the depiction of a possession worthy of inclusion in ‘The Exorcist’. I spent the entire time on the edge of my seat, convinced someone, or something, was going to jump out at me; which surely proves that the cast did their job properly. This is a must-see (even if, like me, you spend most of it with your eyes closed).
