Outward Bound (About Turn Theatre Company)

By | Published on Friday 17 August 2012

Telling the story of a school camping expedition which sees a Jewish teacher forced to spend the weekend with her homosexual colleague, ‘Outward Bound’ aims to confront prejudice about homosexuality in the classroom. But I couldn’t help thinking that the play stereotyped the exact people it aimed to defend – the ‘kids’ dialogue was cringe-inducing and I can only imagine how a gay man would feel watching his identity struggle reduced to a quick fumble in a tent on a school trip. Nervous acting from the two ‘adult’ actors and problematic lighting issues did not help this production. The only saving grace was the two teenage roles, played with sensitivity in the midst of the adversity that was the technical side of the production.
