Oh! What A Lovely War (Italia Conti Company)
By Charlotte Ryan | Published on Friday 31 August 2012
The talented Italia Conti company demonstrate just how unlovely the war was in their revival of this vivid piece of WWI satire. Brilliantly juxtaposing popular propaganda songs with scenes depicting the harsh reality of life in the trenches, the result is an enjoyable and thought-provoking piece. The songs have some of the older members of the audience singing along while one tongue-twisting number sees the whole crowd encouraged to join in. Jono Davies and Lauren Roberts are perfectly cast as the masters of ceremonies, while the supporting cast prove equally talented. This expertly performed musical, in its stance against war, sadly remains as relevant as it was in 1963.
