Noel Coward’s Tonight At 8.30 (Trinity Fringe Productions)

By | Published on Friday 31 August 2012

These two bitingly satirical, socio-realist dramas dish out dirty laughs and menacing observations, all in the discomfort of the characters’ own houses. The cast had wonderful timing and delivery, managing to exude plummy notes second-by-second, and exposing all of the sheer emotion expected from the well off: naivety, repression and droves of wit. I would have preferred to see the second, darker production performed first but it seemed the company wished for a frothy presentation of dark themes. It was slightly unsettling to end proceedings with female violence and paternal walkouts, but perhaps this was their intention. A startling juxtaposition of varying temperaments was displayed by this young cast, who truly understand the sharp, briskly humane qualities so adored by Coward.
