Mozart – The Impresario (Melos Sinfonia)

By | Published on Monday 20 August 2012

After a beautiful interlude from the eleven piece orchestra, we meet Frank the suave yet slimey impresario who makes several attempts to charm two busty opera singers to perform in his show. These prima donnas steal the show with their sour-faced rivalry but it’s the orchestra who are the dark horses. Between the lines of the score, there’s enough time for the cellist to take a cheeky swig of whisky and one of the first violins whips out her copy of ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ – it’s these smaller details which juxtapose so well with the melodrama on the other side of the stage; if only the comedic interplay between musicians and actors went a little further, they might just hit gold.
