Moth To The Flame (Trinity College London)

By | Published on Friday 17 August 2012

‘Moth To The Flame’ is one of those Fringe shows where there’s nothing wrong as such but the sum total ends up being less than the individual parts. 16 year olds Joe Spence and Katurah Morrish are good actors with timing, skill and range. The script, for the most part, works well, with moments of very clever word play – particularly the coinciding internal monologues – even if the pre-watershed language sounds piggin’ daft. Unfortunately, the dramatic events at the end should have been foreshadowed better and the finale rather lets the rest of the play down. A stronger pay off might have helped all the disparate elements hang together better. As it stands, though, it just lacks that final spark.

Paradise at Augustine’s, 6-8 August, 11.15am.
