Montmorency (FreeRange Productions)

By | Published on Tuesday 14 August 2012

I loved Eleanor Updale’s ‘Montmorency’ as a child, so I had high expectations for this adaptation. Satisfyingly, FreeRange did not disappoint. This is an exciting, fast paced production set in Victorian Britain; the plot is intricate, and expertly handled: an ex convict assumes a double identity, in order to enact criminal deeds, through the London sewage system. The actors are superb, particularly Alexander Stutt and Katharine Doheny-Adams (numerous roles) who shone through in each character they played. Victorian England was captured exceptionally well, through ingenious set, period costume and use of accents. The mixture of humour and pathos worked perfectly, ensuring there was never a dull moment, and as the actors took their bows, I was left longing for more.
