Mon Droit (Mike McShane)

By | Published on Friday 31 August 2012

Robert is naïve, witty, intellectual and mentally imbalanced – with a major crush on the Queen. His devotion is such that he gives up everything and travels the Atlantic to swear allegiance. There are several amusing scenes (as would be expected with Mike McShane in the lead role), especially one involving a misunderstanding with a dominatrix, but these comic moments are occasionally tempered by thoughtful observations about royalty. Ultimately, though, I’m not really sure what this is trying to be and it seems to lack depth; being neither funny enough for comedy nor sad enough for tragedy, while the nature of obsession is never explored. The tale of Robert’s quest offers an intriguing approach to the topic of mental illness but fails to develop into something more significant.
