Miss Julie (Vagabond Productions)

By | Published on Friday 24 August 2012

Putting a possibly unintended spin on the 1888 play through some unusual casting, this version of ‘Miss Julie’ managed to make it work. The characters of Miss Julie and Jean were played by actors older than the play suggests. But, mainly due to the high level of acting from both, it felt right, and actually added a layer of poignancy to the play. That’s not to discredit Ailsa Courtney as Christine, who brought out the sharp, funny side of a character who can be reduced to boring. While a few of the more dramatic moments were slightly blunt, the funny ones shone. It might not be the best way to be introduced to this play, but it’s an interesting perspective.
