Medieval Miracle, The Fall of Man (Our Lady’s Companie)

By | Published on Monday 20 August 2012

It is unfortunate that, with such plentiful source material to draw from, a well-meaning production should fall so woefully flat. Great actors can work wonders with sparse staging, and here the echoes of the sounding bowl are certainly atmospheric, but in this masquerade of biblical cut scenes, performances ranged from the overplayed to the wooden. The moment of Eve and Adam’s Fall is expressionless and devoid of rebellious delight, and the medieval chorus of the closing scene is half-hearted, faint, and out of tune. A fragment of Wilfred’s Owen’s ‘Dulce Et Decorum Est’ shoehorned in half way through seems bizarrely out of place in amongst the “thees” and “Thous”. Regrettably, this doesn’t revitalise medieval theatre.
