Me Before Marilyn (Caged Theatre Company)

By | Published on Friday 31 August 2012

This was, more than anything else, a sadly missed opportunity. A minimalistic talking heads biography play about Marilyn Monroe, it aimed for downbeat, personal and understated, but ended up closer to drab. Focusing very much on the personal side of her life, the script offered little context for the stories it told and the structure felt inconsistent; cutting between important events and glossing over a lot of the connecting history. It felt like it was made for people who already know her history, which would have been fine, but the performances weren’t very recognisable either, and felt a little empty. If they’d used her songs, if they’d made her funny, this show could have been a diamond.
