Lysistrata – The Sex Strike (Braindead Theatre Company)

By | Published on Friday 17 August 2012

Braindead Theatre Company attempts to bring the world of Aristophanes into the 21st century in this production, though there’s nothing new about the storyline; Lysistrata convinces the women of Greece to withhold sex from their husbands in order to persuade them to stop fighting the Peloponnesian war. Five boys drag up to play a Spartan sisterhood who dance to Beyonce, ‘run the world’ and use their sexuality as a source of (girl) power.  The misogynistic court and sex hungry soldiers are played by girls whose own gender is effaced by their use of masks, echoing the style of an ancient Greek chorus. These young actors approach their roles with energy, however the tantalization between the sexes relies too heavily on gender stereotypes and penis jokes to bring anything original to the play.
