Locked In (Homo Promo)

By | Published on Friday 31 August 2012

This play, based on the journals of Keith Vaughan, explores the life of a tortured artist and his eventual suicide. An understated piece, it takes us through Vaughan’s love affairs and experiences during the Second World War, with the nice added touch of projections showing Vaughan’s paintings alongside the life stories that inspired them. There is the danger with biographical pieces that they can feel lacking in action, but Vaughan lived an interesting enough life to counter this concern, from being arrested and detained as a fifth columnist during the war to his exotic love affairs in Marrakech and Mexico. Peter Scott-Presland, although stumbling over the occasional line, has perfected an endearing conversational style that helps to bring this biography alive.
