Listen! The River (Rising Solo)
By Dave Fargnoli | Published on Friday 31 August 2012
Less a river than a slowly meandering stream of observations, this one-woman show tells tales of human hope and loss, from the perspective of a cat. Covering several characters and a period of years, actress Wendy Peace gives a fine turn as the feline narrator, and goes to some lengths to make each human voice distinct, but something rings hollow in their depiction as comic caricatures. The two-legged protagonists’ everyday struggles are certainly believable, but they’re so ordinary that you soon find yourself hoping for a twist (which never comes). Instead, you have a story made from quietly unfolding, but incomplete fragments, passing by like scenery viewed from the inside of a cat carrier.
