King Lear (Act One)

As an exploration of ‘Broken Britain’ this production offers very little. In fact, due to set constraints and a strict adherence to the original text it was difficult to ascertain the context of the play without first reading its description. However, merely taken as a production of ‘King Lear’ this company have managed to stage a perfectly enjoyable, if not ground-breaking, play. Any adaptation has to be quite something if it is to stand out and the scope of this production is simply too limited. The decision to model The Fool on Regan MacNeil was an interesting and rewarding risk, and Lear’s descent into madness and the final cathartic scene were genuinely moving, but that wasn’t enough elevate this production above any other.
