Jack – A Ripper’s Tale (Different Device Theatre Company)

By | Published on Friday 31 August 2012

Jack’s familiar tale gets a twisted retelling here, from the perspective of his victims. Focusing on three heart-of-gold hookers, Different Device grab their audience immediately with some impressively outrageous banter. Though they can’t sustain the energy of this solid opening, it’s not for want of trying- undoubtedly inventive, they have a wealth of ideas. Some are effective, like an excellent set piece where a shifting set conveys a chase through Whitechapel. Others, like an unintentionally hilarious Danse Macabre, are less so. Ironically, the humour which is the show’s greatest asset works against it by diffusing the tension the company are trying to build. More dark pantomime than historical horror, this should still satisfy the ‘midnight ghost tour’ crowd.

Paradise in the Vault, 21-27 Aug, 10.00pm.
