I Never Saw Another Butterfly (American High School Theatre Festival)

By | Published on Friday 31 August 2012

This is a moving piece of theatre from the American High School Theatre Festival, telling the story of the many children who lived (and died) in the Terezin ghetto in Prague during WW2, and of one particular girl, Raja, who survived. Making use of some clever theatrical devices, this piece is very well directed and tells a heart-rending tale. Haunting projections of paintings, sketches and photos created by the real Jewish children who lived in the Terezin ghetto add to the atmosphere created on stage. Loss, grief and love combine in Raja, giving her a fierce desire to live. It reminds us that there is nothing quite like the human spirit which, with courage, can survive unimaginable atrocities.
