I Am A Moon (Yesoo Company, Nanjing University, China)
By Jessamine McHugh | Published on Monday 20 August 2012
I Am A Moon certainly shoots for it in this ambitious multimedia production about the trials and tribulations of finding love, especially for oneself. A certain feeling of voyeurism pervades the show, as characters express their deepest emotions and sexual experiences, often whilst being minimally clothed. This impression is heightened when the characters speak from behind a thin curtain with images of life and nature projected upon it, which creates a strong contrast between the public and private realms, yet confuses the boundaries between them. The storyline can be quite difficult to follow, especially in surtitled Chinese, but the hugely expressive acting saves the show, and made for an interesting and worthwhile production.
