How’s About That Then? The Jimmy Savile Story (Cahoots Theatre Company)

By | Published on Friday 17 August 2012

The last person to listen to about Jimmy Savile’s life would seem to be Jimmy Savile himself, as proved by this bizarre and worrying ‘autobiographical’ monologue. Initially it seems quite fun to watch a man with a giant fake cigar in a shell suit batting through allegations of necrophilia and statutory rape, but it eventually becomes clear that we’re witnessing a scarring psychological portrait of a sociopathic sex-addict, who wants to teach us something morally dubious. Garry Roost gives an endearing and convincing performance as the pest but this is the last thing the content warrants. The show is misguided and uncomfortable, and only makes one think that this character  ought to spend no more time in the spotlight.
