Hinge Presents Ordinary Things (Hinge Theatre)
By Lisa Clarkson | Published on Friday 31 August 2012
Reflection is the theme of Hinge Theatre’s site-specific piece, figuratively and exactly. The darkened, heavily dressed room itself was a character, and the strangeness of glimpsing into one of the many mirrors, only to meet eyes with another spectator added to the intended unsettling voyeuristic feel of ‘Ordinary Things’. Of the two couples, one present day and one past (played by the same actors), the Sixties pair are the most compelling. The young artist, watching and filming a drunk, homeless revolutionary; us watching her film of him, him watching himself; it was all quite demanding, at times confusing. Even the conclusion is elusive, and narrative loose ends are left untied; I suspect to reflect the nature of the couples themselves.
Hill Street Theatre, 2-26 Aug (not 14), 8.30pm.
