Half A Person – My Life As Told By The Smiths (Cross Cut)

By | Published on Thursday 23 August 2012

Unlike Morrissey’s lyrics, ‘Half A Person’ is full of clichés and poor writing. Sauntering off to graveyards and drifting about in cafés, William, a pretentious Smiths fan, becomes infatuated with a girl from Manchester. This one-man show features live singing to a backing track with dancing to reveal William’s inner turmoil – but it just comes across as ill-fitting and weird, not really giving the piece the rawness it needs. It seems that a few Smiths songs were picked and a half-hearted plot was made to fit around them, but it doesn’t really go anywhere. Joe Murray is an engaging storyteller but this is let down by the sloppy writing and unimaginative plot.
