Firing Blanks (Fine Chisel)
By Jo Barrow | Published on Thursday 23 August 2012
‘Firing Blanks’ is an exquisitely crafted piece of theatre that portrays the emotional fallout from male infertility. Although initially I was unimpressed by the cliché concept of a man unburdening himself to a stranger he meets on a park bench, it was an absolute pleasure to be proven wrong over the course of the show. Robert McLoughlin gives a heartbreaking performance as he comes to terms with the truth of his situation, and creative cutaways depicting the relationship he’ll have with his donor child are beautiful but harrowing in their truth. I urge you to see this play, the questions it raises about masculinity and fatherhood are ones we should all consider.
