Faust/us (DBS Productions)

By | Published on Friday 17 August 2012

As a child Calum MacAskill must have been the sort who could “amuse himself”. In this one man show, based on Christopher Marlowe’s ‘Doctor Faustus’, his clothes become a baby and the seven deadly sins, while he makes out with a reel of tape (it’s Helen of Troy). Yet one has to admire the thought in this production: projections and voice-overs representing both the divine and the demons. Sometimes, though, this can break the spell; although the intimate space in a commercial hotel is perfect for a tale about selling one’s soul to the devil, I never felt entirely convinced. And without that believability we’re just watching a guy dance around with his jumper over his head.

Sweet Grassmarket, 2-12 Aug, 7.50pm.
