FAT (Pete Edwards / Escalator East To Edinburgh / Lakeside Theatre)

By | Published on Tuesday 7 August 2012

The argument presented by this piece – that physically disabled people are sexual beings with fantasies and desires – is an acutely important one that sadly remains a marginalised and largely unspoken topic. In FAT this point is forcefully made, but it is so drawn out that the message becomes almost aggressively unrelenting, and later sequences may unsettle or upset some viewers. FAT will certainly shift perspectives, and it succeeds in making a very powerful statement on identity and desire. Audience responses will vary greatly though, and among those who live with a disability, or who take care of disabled friends or relatives, some may find it hard to endure its confrontational stance.
