Excess (Negative Capability)

I’ll admit that I was shocked when I found out that handsome Joe was getting a sex change. My reaction, however, was nothing compared to his sister Isla’s. For although this play is ostensibly about Joe’s decision, it uses the subject to delve into her character: she’s an annoying, bitter woman but it becomes hard not to respond to her spiky vulnerability. Key to this are scenes from other parts of her life, acted out with hand-puppets, which make everything feel more poignant. The characters are very human – they deliberately hurt each other, express love, tease – though sometimes their too theatrical retelling of events can undermine this. A new work which is a brilliant snapshot of a life.
