Educating Ronnie (Macrobert and Utter / HighTide Festival Theatre)

By | Published on Friday 31 August 2012

The experience of educating Ronnie has left some quite serious baggage for Joe Douglas, and the director-turned-performer gains catharsis by divesting himself of it on stage. The production is aided by direction from Gareth Nicholls, who helped Douglas see through the haze and translate his story into theatre, and this partly pays off as Ronnie’s correspondence, usually involving cash requests, is projected, and goes some way to illustrating just what Douglas took on throughout his younger years. But the overall result is a weak structure and a narrative that struggles to define exactly what it wants to say, as the process meanders to a close without the punch you may hope for. Still, the theatrics make for an enjoyable hour.

Assembly George Square, 1-26 Aug (not 12, 13), 1.15pm.
