Don Quixote! Don Quixote! (Panta Rei Theatre Collective / Pleasance Theatre Trust)

By | Published on Friday 31 August 2012

‘Don Quixote’ is a widely interpreted text, featuring a tightly strung narrative. This production seems to ignore its relationship to the novel and viewed as a stand-alone product, it is entirely useless. Meandering from one odd pseudo-existential movement to another, the company seems to have more interest in shallow aesthetics than a serious consideration of a literary work or independent theatrical storytelling. Three people walked out during the experimental staging, which featured little dialogue, and when language did arise, it was often clumsy. The finale featured cast members carrying around objects, not unlike children who had raided the spare room cupboard, before declaring that we ”don’t chose life or death, but in-between we make decisions”. Deep.
