Coalition (Spontaneity Shop)

This is everything politics isn’t: engaging, informed and delightfully witty. ‘Coalition’ dramatises the plight of the Liberal Democrats in 2014, bed-sharing with the Conservatives in government. The script cleverly creates a scenario that is hardly fictitious, but not focused on issues like the deficit, scrutinising more dramatic aspects of politics and finding comedy in them. With simple staging and minimal use of props, the acting is the stand-out quality; highlights of the star-studded line-up include: Thom Tuck, who gives a virtuoso performance as party leader, Jessica Regan as his brilliantly charismatic secretary, Jo Caulfield as a scarily stern chief whip and Phil Jupitus playing a hilariously smug Tory MP. Concise, original and very funny, this is definitely worth seeing.
