Chatroom (GYTC)
By Alexandra Wilks | Published on Friday 31 August 2012
A play set in an internet chat-room is a pretty difficult thing to imagine and to GYTC’s credit they do it well; this production rarely feels static as it outlines the dangerous games played in virtual chat spaces, and the effects these can have. There’s no doubt the young cast are talented, but I wonder if they would have been even more successful with a different script; the characters are very underdeveloped here and the motivation for their actions are very unclear. Though aside from the plot niggles, the show runs smoothly in the main, even if the few attempts at humour tend to sink like a lead balloon. Though again, this isn’t really the cast’s fault: the play just isn’t very funny.
