Chariot – The Eric Liddell Story (Searchlight Theatre Company)

By | Published on Friday 24 August 2012

If you’ve seen the film ‘Chariots of Fire’, you already know some of Scottish sportsman Eric Liddell’s inspiring story. This play focuses on the build-up to the 1924 Olympics, when the strictly Christian athlete famously refused to compete on a Sunday. If at times ‘Chariot’ struggles under the weight of historical information, it’s never an endurance trial, getting a boost from a smart script and fine performances. David Robinson stands out as coach Tom McKerchar, injecting the show with laconic humour and dramatic driving force, helping to elevate this from mere biography to an exploration of determination, ambition and faith. If you’re suffering post-Olympic sports withdrawal, this thoughtful character study may be just what you need.

Edinburgh Elim, 15–25 Aug (not 19, 20), times vary.
