Candide (American High School Theatre Festival)
By Charlotte Mortimer-Talman | Published on Friday 31 August 2012
‘Candide’ is a musical performance adapted from Hugh Wheeler’s ‘Voltaire’, losing none of the author’s dry wit, clever turns of speech and amusing commentary on society. Making use of a large cast, with well-executed chorus numbers and the clever application of coloured silks as costume and set, ‘Candide’ could be the jewel in the American High School Theatre Festival’s crown. The music is extremely impressive, and even more so is the voice of Kathryn Kilger, who played CunĂ©gonde and reached exquisite notes, though it was the side characters of Maximillian and the Old Woman who were my personal favourites. Extremely witty, philosophical and a little bit ridiculous, ‘Candide’ was brilliantly performed and a lot of fun to watch.
Church Hill Theatre, 6-10 Aug (not 7), times vary.
