The plays of George Bernard Shaw have become slightly unfashionable in recent years and with productions like this it isn’t difficult to see why. Only a few witty one-liners excavated themselves from a script buried by uninspiring performances (Miss Garnett being the only notable exception), and some characters suffered from poor diction (I was perpetually confused as to which accents were being attempted). It was a script that needed help in the first place, providing no strong sense of time or place, or even much intrigue beyond some 19th century social commentary. Ultimately, it wasn’t clear what had motivated the cast and crew to stage this play, and I couldn’t think of a good reason either.

Assembly George Square, 1-27 Aug (not 13), 11.40am.
