Blithe Spirit (Edinburgh Makars)

By | Published on Thursday 23 August 2012

Spooks and séances are the order of the day as local amateur dramatic group the Edinburgh Makars tackle Noel Coward’s ghostly farce. It’s a very good-looking production, with great costumes and staging, but unfortunately the acting on display is not quite up to scratch. A lack of comedic delivery and timing robs Coward’s script of a lot of its punch, leaving many of the jokes and potentially amusing situations to fall by the wayside. The cast also tend to focus more on maintaining their clipped accents than actually acting. They are a spirited bunch though (pun intended), and there’s no denying the production has a certain charm to it, but it’s really not great.
