Blake’s Doors (Revolving Shed – LSE SU’s Theatre Company)

Actor Tom Wilkinson begins the show with a well-written, engaging monologue about hearing other people’s conversations, asking how much you need know about someone before making a judgement. Sadly this is just a prologue, as the audience are transported to a hospital ward inhabited by three characters they know nothing about, and the purpose of the play is not to reveal anything further. A snapshot of three different personalities confined in an isolated and vulnerable place, the lack of a strong narrative isn’t anti-dramatic. ‘Blake’s Doors’ avoids cliché, instead bubbling gently along with a well-acted naturalism. Rachel Williams’ portrayal of an old lady is thoroughly convincing, although this play prefers a strong concept to strong content.
