Birds On A Wire (Hardin-Simmons University – International Collegiate Theatre Festival)

Telling the story of a family of farmers struggling through the Dust Bowl, ‘Birds On A Wire’ rather belabours its point. Like the drought it depicts, scenes outstay their welcome and the whole show feels half an hour too long, yet somehow we still don’t see any real character development. Samuel Cress gives a decent performance as the nice but dim Harlen and Debbie Crawford’s grief is a good moment. However, the rest of the student cast are only average, lacking the skill to carry off angry desperation and too many scenes end up bland and monotonous as a result. Like the family’s winter wheat, this play never really comes good.
