Beyond Hillsborough (Zipped Up Theatre Company)

By | Published on Saturday 11 August 2012

The Hillsborough football ground disaster of 1989 left 96 Liverpool fans dead and remains a sensitive topic to this day. While this harrowing performance barely went ‘beyond’ Hillsborough, it did present a stark portrayal of the human tragedy. Actors powerfully gave voice to the shocking tales of the suffering of real people affected, including those of survivors and relatives of the deceased; their sense of anger and injustice was allowed to speak for itself. Given its focus, this show had a natural bias, and I felt it would have benefited from information from different quarters in order to give the audience a better understanding of events; but then the families affected are seeking the same thing, and in part this was a project aiming to raise awareness, a goal it achieved in an emotive, unforgettable way.
