Beth (Violet Shock)

By | Published on Thursday 23 August 2012

‘Beth’ is a reimagined, rock music version of Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’, with the gender roles reversed. This production sees Beth take down the Queen of Scotland in her quest for power. The swap is most effective for the characters portrayed by Chris Rushmere-York, Reece Connolly and Jonny Hall who give an incredible performance as the Wyrd Brothers. Lucy Alston also stands out in her performance as Princess Malia. Unfortunately, the energy and drama of the original version is missing from this one, perhaps due to the lack of live band. Many performers also struggled with projection making it difficult at times to follow the plot. The show itself has potential but it’s not quite there yet.
