Best Served Cold (Room 55 Productions)

Cassie is dead, and her body lies bundled in a chest while a university reunion party celebrating her ”big break” gets under way. Adapted from Patrick Hamilton’s ‘Rope’, this play has catty snipes, jealousy, and dark humour in abundance, and touches on themes of superficiality and professional competition in the arts world. The champagne-fuelled verbal backstabbing that takes place amid a clash of egos is fun to watch, and the young cast are at ease in their performance; they interact comfortably with one another, feeding off each other’s reactions and creating a lively stage dynamic. The characters, however, are exaggerated to the point of resembling farcical versions of well-to-do aspiring thespians. Nevertheless, this is a promising performance.
