Becoming Conocido (CalArts Festival Theater)

By | Published on Friday 31 August 2012

Hispanic, Latina or Mexican-American? Apparently Jennifer doesn’t really see herself as any, and chooses ‘other’ by default. This is a short but sweet piece about identity and belonging that explores the urge to resist categorization; through a string of memory-evoking documents and photographs, the narrative follows the experiences of this character growing up. Jennifer discusses her confused sense of being: brought up in a Spanish-speaking family, but sensing herself excluded on grounds of language, and her regrets of not asserting herself in school when issues of her ethnicity were raised by her peers. On the whole this play is neatly structured, but it ends nevertheless on a rather vague note, and the narrative tails away rather inconclusively.
