As Ye Sow (Theatre Of The Damned and Bare Bawds Theatre)
By Thom May | Published on Monday 13 August 2012
Homes for the elderly do make unpleasant viewing material on stage; perhaps it’s a fear of dying, or the recent care home abuse scandals, which make us uncomfortable. Horror-play ‘As Ye Sow’ draws on these fears but doesn’t quite manage to make them matter: the play is flat and feels like filler for the horror, which is as effective as loud unpleasant noises tend to be, but gives no insight into what it’s like to live in a care home other than it’s a bit like being haunted, or being punished. Thankfully, the occasional jumpy bits provide the audience with the adrenaline that’s lacking in the plot, but the acting is often underwhelming. There are subtleties to the production but little else to reap.
