A One Man Hamlet (Living Art – Australia/Germany)

Andrew Cowie’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s text presents the entirety of the action through Hamlet’s eyes. This is a point-of-view piece – an in-depth analysis of the protagonist’s mind – and actor Will Bligh is unwavering in his focus. A monochromatic colour scheme and stark set certainly suits the ‘stripped-down’ aspect of this production, and removing all other actors from the stage in order to expose Hamlet makes for an interesting set-up in the sequencing of events – we learn of Ophelia’s death, for example, only when Hamlet does. But with no other actors to engage with, flights of passion fall on empty air, and the unique moments that emerge from interactive stage dynamics are absent, resulting in the feeling that something is lacking.
