A Man For All Times: W E B DuBois (Pulse Ensemble Theatre)

By | Published on Friday 31 August 2012

This intense solo performance tells the tale of W E B DuBois, a forgotten hero from the American civil rights movement. Brian Richardson’s vivid portrayal of DuBois never falters as within the dark confines of the stage he becomes a sheltered child, determined student, grieving parent. It is telling of both the direction and performance that such an awe-inspiring, striking story can be told with so many moments of humour. This compelling piece tackles the breadth of DuBois’ story, and the varying subject matter, from the horrors to the successes, is conveyed via a smooth, flowing performance. While a vast amount of material is squeezed into this hour-long monologue, all of it makes for insightful, emotional and fascinating viewing.
