2008 – Macbeth (Edinburgh International Festival / TR Warszawa)

Explosions! Gunfire! Severed heads! Gallons of blood! Set in a modern day war-torn country, this production of Macbeth is a true spectacle. With a massive, three storey set, comprising several different performance spaces, an undulating, booming soundtrack, a hell of a lot of smoke, and pyrotechnics you could feel the heat from, this is one of the most immersive theatre experiences I’ve ever had. Mixing Shakespeare’s original text with new dialogue, the story absolutely fits the setting and is completely relevant to the modern political climate. Projections are used to great effect too, with live shots of actors’ faces shown, allowing action to be viewed simultaneously from different angles. It is absolutely unforgettable.

Lowland Hall, Royal Highland Centre, 11-18 Aug, times vary.
